A college in name only, Dartmouth is a research university composed of an undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences, the Geisel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering, the Tuck School of Business Administration, and the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies.
While institutional character is rooted in a focus on liberal arts undergraduate education, the strength of Dartmouth’s graduate and professional schools and their almost seamless juxtaposition with the undergraduate college create an exciting environment for interactive learning, particularly in the basic sciences, medicine, and engineering. Dartmouth’s strategic vision includes the following institutional priorities: (1) recognition of the critical importance of the liberal arts at the College while also advancing the work of the graduate and professional schools; (2) enhancement of support for scholarship while never losing sight of the central role of teaching in the classroom and at the laboratory bench; and (3) assurance of the integrity of academic departments and schools while fostering interdisciplinary opportunities and activities that cross school and department boundaries; and (4) recognition of the importance of outreach activities that extend Dartmouth’s instructional capacity beyond traditional campus boundaries. It is this fourth component of Dartmouth’s strategic vision that this project addresses.
