Sarah Y. Valles
Molecular & Cellular Biology
I graduated from UC Irvine having majored in Biology, and I am now a PhD candidate in the molecular and cellular biology (MCB) program. Using mainly microscopy and biochemistry, my work in the lab focuses on cell division and how a number of different cellular processes are integrated to accurately produce two genetically equivalent daughter cells. Previously as part of the national organization, Latinos in Science and Engineering -- MAES, and currently, as an organizer for Science Day at Dartmouth, I have sought out ways of reaching out to the community and make science more accessible, especially for students that may lack scientific resources. However, those experiences have been one-day events with students I may not meet again. I was therefore interested in becoming a SEPA mentor to directly help students in a more structured and long-lasting manner.
