Lisa Francomacaro, Molecular & Cellular Biology, MD/PhD

Lisa Francomacaro on cliff

I grew up in a small town in Maryland, the daughter of two engineers. I attended Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, where I graduated with a B.S. in Cell Biology and Biochemistry. Interested in both practicing medicine and performing wet lab research, I matriculated to the MD/PhD program at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. Here at Dartmouth, I conduct research in the biochemistry lab of Dr. Surachai Supattapone. Specifically, I study the genetic mechanisms of viral neurotoxicity. I ask why some viruses infect and kill neurons while others do not. Outside of the lab and the clinic, I enjoy hiking, swimming, cross stitch, and curling up with a good book and a mug of hot cocoa. I became interested in SEPA mentorship through my outreach efforts as a rural health scholar; I believe that students empowered to study STEM will have the skills and knowledge to make healthy decisions throughout their lives.
